SOUTHEASTERN THERAPY ANIMAL RESOURCES (S.T.A.R)
Background
Southeastern Therapy Animal Resources (STAR), a local club of nationally registered pet therapy volunteers, was established in 2001. Our mission is to promote the appropriate use of suitably trained animals in therapeutic settings, including animal assisted therapy and animal assisted activities as well as “pet therapy” visits. We are a 501(c) 3 organization.
To accomplish our mission we:
Educate the public about the value and appropriate use of animals in therapy
Serve as an information clearinghouse among groups and individuals in the Southeastern states, particularly the Charleston, S.C. area, who practice animal assisted activities and animal assisted therapy
Assist nursing homes, hospitals, hospices, schools, and other institutions in the Charleston, S.C. area in setting up effective animal assisted activities, animal assisted therapy, and “pet therapy” visitation programs
Conduct information sessions and training workshops for persons in the Charleston, S.C. area who wish to become therapy dog handlers
Offer periodic review sessions for experienced therapy dog handlers

THERAPY WORKSHOPS
Join STAR Therapy Dogs for an overview of what is involved in becoming a therapy team. We discuss how to become a member of a national registry, explore venues for you and your dog to serve throughout the community and stress the importance of relevant laws and rules you are required to follow. Join us for the fun roleplaying exercise of presenting your dog on a visit to our mock nursing home, Cozy Acres. If you have ever wondered if you and your dog would make a good therapy team, this is the place to come to explore the possibilities and have all your questions answered
